Hi, I’m Muninder(Web Developer and UI designer).

I’ve been testing website builders since 2015

Combining my research, trial tests on website builders, real user reviews and ratings curated on this websites, I’ve created this ultimate guide to choose best website builder.

I think most of the small businessmen can relate to this(at least with a parts of it): “Creating efficient websites and dealing with web programmers, designers, web development teams for it is an uphill battle!”

But, is it really?

The answer is both YES and NO

Yes, it is an uphill battle, if you are a small businessman paying thousands of dollars to developers to create and maintain your business website.

No, if you know what a website builder is and how to design your website with a site builder!

This guide is for all those YES saying businessmen!

There are over hundred website builders out there to let you create a business website or personal blogs on your own in minutes.(NO CODING NEEDED). I have created a sample website with each one of those top web builders to create this website as an ultimate guide to choosing the best website builder.

Lets Dive-in to create your website today!

Every Business Needs A Website

I know it is stating the obvious, but I have to do it!

“Let it be a global Amazon sized enterprise or local bakery in Whitlam Square,Sydney. EVERY BUSINESS NEEDS A WEBSITE

After all when 78.9% of Australia is using internet, having a website is a must for every business.

There are numerous ways of creating a website but my guide is about “creating a website on your own”, quickly and easily!

Creating  a Website!

Designing a web page is an exercise in troubleshooting.

In its core, the task is plain: create a space online and communicate your message or vision across, using multimedia, text and graphics.

As I said before, there are a thousand ways of doing that. And this is a conservative estimate. The catchy design solutions, the captivating visual techniques and the enticing styles of presenting the written text are myriads.

Similarly, the technical means by which an idea can acquire a visible, digital form are numerous. From a simple notepad to complicated programming IDE’s; from the easy to use website builders, through the powerful design possibilities of vast Content Management Systems to the quiet background churring of client and server-based frameworks.

The solutions and approaches are like the stars in a clear night. Realistically, they can be counted, but for all practical purposes they can be considered innumerable. The reason for such opulence lies in the fact that there is not one solution that fits all tastes and needs.

Right off the top of my head I can tell you that there are three general paths toward the creation of an ecommerce business. You can build a web store with one of the many free shopping cart solutions, go for Shopify or even Magento, if you intend to start big and grow even bigger.

Starting a website – The CODING WAY

Likewise, for general-purpose websites, if you know how to code, you could utilize the in-built functionality of frameworks like Django or play with WordPress, creating perfection.

Along with coding, this involves planning technical requirements, designing prototypes, setting up hosting, debugging and maintenance.

As mentioned earlier, I am not going to dig deep into coding and complicated ways. I am here to promote the easy way to build websites

WordPress- The Easy Way to Create a Website

Indeed, WordPress is one of the most common choices.

CMS Usage Australia

Hailed for its simplicity and unrivalled functionality, soon after its inception WordPress became the go-to solution for blogging and well-designed websites. Ever since its fame has been growing, reaching unprecedented heights and constantly acquiring new vocal supporters.

Vast Community, Innumerable Plugins and Themes

Its vast community is responsible for the creation of countless plugins and themes. As a result, this free platform easily outperforms other open-source Content Management Systems like Drupal and Joomla.

As you can see in the chart, other CMSs cannot realistically rival the popularity of WordPress.

It is website building platforms like WiX and Weebly that can and do. WiX, in particular, has well over 100 million subscribers. While nowhere near the user base of WordPress, it is significantly more than the 81 million downloaded versions of Joomla or the meagre 1.8 million Drupal users.

For over ten years now the website builder software that is WiX has been imbuing with creative power the fingertips of millions of users with absolutely no technical knowledge. Its intuitive drag-and-drop interface moves the process of website creation from the realm of rigid coding rules to the realm of playful artistry.

WordPress is easy, but Website Builders are EASIER!

I mentioned that one of the greatest advantages WordPress boasts is its simplicity.

Here is the time to clarify that this simplicity is measured on a scale.

It is definitely easy to create a good-looking website on WordPress than to code it from the ground up. Using frameworks also requires deep understanding of coding and databases. Such highly technical approaches rest on one end of the complexity scale.

On the other end of the scale reside the online website builder platforms; they are easier to use than WordPress by orders of magnitude.

{lets create a scale image for illustrating the complexity of website building with coding, wordpress and website builders}

This is the spot WiX, Weebly, Squarespace and the likes occupy. They allow people who don’t have the technical knowledge, nor the time or resources to acquire it, to build spectacular websites in the span of a couple of days.

That’s why it is no surprise that WiX is where it is today.(With 2.53B Market Cap)

Website Builders are perfect for Small business owners

The ease of use all best website builder softwares sport doesn’t reduce only time and effort invested. It guarantees that you wouldn’t need the professional help of a web developer, saving you a lot of headaches, uncertainty and money.

For many small, personal websites – blogs, portfolios, local restaurants, businesses – investing heavily in a website is simply not feasible. The investment would be monetary if you were to hire a coder or temporal, if you were to get versed in WordPress.

And if Website builders like WIX, weebly, Squarespace are suitable mostly for small or medium non-commerce websites, the Online store builders like BigCommerce, Shopify make it possible for big ecommerce projects to assume their rightful place on the internet.

Why you should choose a website builder over WordPress

I am not saying that the online store builders or a drag-and-drop website builder are the ideal solutions for all types of projects.

These website building platforms are not as versatile as WordPress, but this is a trade-off for the simplicity and ease of use.

In my experience, the limitless possibilities WordPress offers always remain in the sphere of potential possibilities. Utilizing everything simply doesn’t happen because each website has a concept; realizing it is a specific problem that has to be solved. There might be hundreds of ways to reach the desired results, but ultimately one or two are put to a good use. All other possibilities never acquire tangible form and most of them are not even considered.

With this being said, WordPress would be the logical choice to create a website if you want to have full control over your website.

Hosted vs Self Hosted Website building solutions

Most of the website builders can be categorized as hosted solutions because everything – site building tools, web hosting, support – is provided in one package by the same company, be that WiX, Squarespace or another one.

Such arrangement adds to the ease of use but takes away a certain degree of control.

WordPress like all other open source content management systems is a self-hosted solution because

Firstly you must find hosting company for it,

Know how to connect a domain name with your hosting using name servers

Then install the wordpress software  and configure.

This process is more time-consuming with an added layer of technical complexity.

But on the bright side, you’d end up having full control of your website

Beside that, there are wide range of other benefits of using WordPress, but the degree of knowledge and the management constitute a serious commitment.

If you have the budget and the inclination, hiring a professional web developer is also an option. For big businesses, which need enhanced security and very specific custom features combined with unique outlook, a team of developers and designers would be the logical choice.

Its considerable cost aside, this approach is not for everybody as working with developers is a matter of delegation. In the vast majority of cases the end result would be aligned closer to their vision than to yours. Negotiating with designers can be very frustrating. You need to find the right people for the job, people who you can trust and whose work you like.

Note: With wordpress website builder plugins like Elementor, you can have a decent open source website builder, easing web design and website creation for you.

Going back to using an easy website builder, you’d lack a certain degree of control, but you’d have brilliant support and unmatched ease of use in designing the website.

A free website builder like WiX is ideal for small to medium sites. Perfectly suitable for blogging, portfolios and business websites, it even has an ecommerce solution for small online stores.

Getting to know its interface takes mere hours

If you have the concept in mind ,with WIX’s best website design software which includes artificial design intelligence, you can create a functional website in a couple of days

WordPress Vs Website Builders

For comparison, getting started with WordPress often takes a couple of days, after you have found a suitable web hosting company. Exploring its basic functionality, installing the right theme and finding the best website building interface can take two or three `weeks of some serious dedication.

Additionally, troubleshooting WordPress, with its countless plugins and add-ons is either a trial and error process or random guess work.

Comparatively, site builders like WiX and Weebly are easier to understand, set up and use .

Best thing about them is : You don’t need to trial and error or search endlessly for right solution.

The comprehensive support from all best website builder softwares is extensive.

Website Builders are WordPress Alternatives.

Before Wix made its name in the website development business, other open source content management systems like Drupal, Joomla used to be WordPress alternatives.

But now it is Website Builders and SaaS(Software as a Service) Ecommerce platforms!

Website Builders Market is growing  BIG now!

Let it be the ease of use or extensive customer support, more and more non technical people are preferring website builders over WordPress their website development

And when I say website builders:

It’s not just WIX, Weebly or Squarespace.

Every top gun businesses associated with websites like top web hosting companies, search engines, domain name registrars are starting their own website builder softwares.

For example:  Hosting companies like 1&1 web hosting, Godaddy that once marketed themselves with “one click wordpress installation” tools are now pitching their sales with their new website builders.

Domain name registrar companies like Net Registry,, Crazydomains also have added their softwares to Website builder market now.

We even have a Google website builder now!

On the whole, my assumption is there are over 100 website builder.

How to Choose the best Website builder?

Let it be a big or small website builder. All of them have just one goal in mind:

To simplify the website building process!

But only few does that efficiently. With few others you can just manage okay!

So, choosing any one of them is not a choice. And that leaves us with a big question:

How to choose the best website builder from those “over 100 site builders”?

So, I have put in my expertise in web development and design, Search Engine Optimization to research on website builders to figure out the best website builder and best store builder from those hundreds. Based on my research I have decided to test and review website builders based on following factors.

Factors to Compare Website Builders

All the same, there are certain common factors that helped me do the website builder comparison and draw reasonably well-established conclusions on what is the best website builder for small business websites.

  1. Ease of use – How quickly and easily you can get going with the website design
  2. Speed – how quickly sites built with the examined platform load
  3. Reliability – uptime
  4. SEO tools – much needed nowadays, some site builders provide better SEO options than others
  5. Templates – number and quality of the templates
  6. Backend coding – related to all aforementioned factors, it determines how well sites built with the examined platform perform
  7. Pricing
  8. Technical support
  9. Real User Reviews : Real users rate and write website builder reviews.

All these serve as a map on my quest to find the best website builder AUS users can enjoy.

Website Builder Comparison Chart

[We need to create such a chart- PLEASE DO NOT POST THIS CHART AS IT IS]

With these unifying factors, I could only list out good few website builders from hundreds on overall terms.

But I cannot tag one of them as best website builder for all website building needs.

Some of them are good website builder for small business websites, some are perfect for blogging, some for multilingual websites while some other are are good long one page web builders.

So I have pros and cons of each of those top website builders below.(There are detailed reviews, performances and real user reviews and ratings on individual website builder review pages. )

Without further ado, let’s dive in. You will see for yourself what I mean.

Top website builders

WiX – the biggest and probably the easiest to use, WiX website builder delivers tremendous functionality with very intuitive interface. Every WiX review you’d stumble upon, this one included, hails its intuitive interface and drag-and-drop functionality, making WiX the most suitable website builder for beginners.

Frequent updates introduce new WiX templates on a regular basis. They are based on modern design concepts and are very beautiful and fully responsive.

There is a big app market where many free and paid plugins can be added to your site. Their number constantly grows; using the numerous WiX filters helps a lot in finding what you need.

WiX pros:

  1. Very easy to use
  2. The platform is well-coded
  3. Wix websites load quickly
  4. Constant updates and upgrades
  5. Decent SEO toolset
  6. Good uptime
  7. Good support team
  8. Excellent for blogging, portfolio and business sites
  9. WiX pricing is very competitive
  10. Free plan :

WiX cons:

  1. Free plan and the smallest paid plan display ads
  2. Once chosen, a template cannot be switched for another
  3. Not that great ecommerce options

Weebly – WiX’s closest competitor, Weebly website builder is another excellent option for beginners. It takes only a few minutes to orient yourself and to get comfortable with the drag-and-drop design interface. Everything is where you’d expect it to be, easily accessible and ready to use.

The Weebly templates are stylish and functional, but they are fewer in number and don’t see updates as often as their WiX counterparts. Weebly templates are getting better and better but can feel a tad inflexible at times. Moving things around doesn’t always bring the desired results.

Weebly has greater in-built functionality than WiX and also sports a rich app store.

Along with that the free plan they have, makes it the best free website builder for small businesses

Weebly pros:

  1. Very easy to use
  2. Good platform, free of glitches and with optimized backend
  3. Weebly sites load quickly
  4. Good uptime
  5. You can create membership area
  6. Decent SEO toolset
  7. Excellent support team
  8. Free plan
  9. Suitable for beginners, restaurant owners, portfolios, small ecommerce

Weebly cons:

  1. Weebly pricing could be more competitive
  2. Templates could be more flexible
  3. The platform updates are not that frequent
  4. Albeit functional, the blogging feature is not that impressive

Squarespace – arguably the prettiest of the bunch, Squarespace templates are a real beauty. Fully optimized for mobile devices, they are sleek and ravishing… as long as you have good quality images. They rely heavily on good imagery, making them ideal for websites for photography, portfolios and restaurants.

Their design is so intricate that one must have a good eye for composition in order to maintain the balance and the captivating overall impression they project. The possibilities for modifying the templates are numerous, allowing you to exert a great degree of control and customization.

I feel Squarespace themes is one the main factors, that secure a place for it in top 10 website builders list.

However, beside that there are other pros that make Squarespace a good website builder

Squarespace pros:

  1. Fantastic designs
  2. Very solid SEO toolset
  3. Best blog builder
  4. Perfect for portfolio, photography and restaurant websites as well.
  5. Reasonably good ecommerce options
  6. SSL included in all plans
  7. Squarespace help centre and support are excellent
  8. 14-day free tutorial

Squarespace cons:

  1. Squarespace pricing leans toward the expensive side
  2. The sites built with it could be faster to load; image optimization is a must
  3. Relatively steep learning curve thanks to the immense styling options
  4. No backup option

Top ecommerce website builders

Just like the general-purpose website builders are giving the CMSs a good run for their money, ecommerce site builders contest quite successfully the market dominance of Magento and, to a lesser degree, WooCommerce. Shopify and BigCommerce make the creation of online shops a rather easy proposition.

Shopify – setting up an online shop can hardly be easier. Shopify is one of the easiest to use store builders; the basic setup takes minutes. Despite its extensive app store, Shopify comes with great functionality right off the bat.

Great templates and very good customisation options make Shopify suitable for absolute beginners. Adding products and creating custom descriptions is incredibly easy, while calculating taxes and shipment fees is fully automated.

With Shopify you can use the mesmerising 70 (!) payment options.

Shopify pros:

  1. Amazing functionality
  2. A well-rounded ecommerce website builder
  3. Good templates
  4. Rich app store
  5. Decent frontend and backend speed
  6. Product export and import function
  7. Good knowledge base and support team

Shopify cons:

  1. Plans are rather pricy, not very suitable for very small stores
  2. Template customization could be slightly more extensive
  3. Transaction fees tend to pile up
  4. Plugins could inflate the monthly bill significantly
  5. SEO toolset could be better

BigCommerce – the most popular website builder Australia has produced to date, BigCommerce is ready to use out of the box. It also has a very rich app store, but, for the most part, you’d get everything you need with the initial setup.

And while the monthly fees might seem rather steep at first, BigCommerce doesn’t charge any transaction fees, which makes its plans very affordable.

Products can be added easily, with as many variations as you please. There is a membership area and a fully customisable shopping cart.

BigCommerce pros:

  1. Excellent in-built functionality
  2. Product variations
  3. Coupon codes
  4. Straightforward and transparent pricing
  5. Good loading speed
  6. Rich app store
  7. Full integration with many social media
  8. Ideal for medium and large stores
  9. 15-day free trial

BigCommerce cons:

  1. Only 7 free templates
  2. Annual limits on sales
  3. There is a learning curve
  4. Relatively basic creator for landing pages

Volusion – among all ecommerce platforms Volusion seems to have the most in-built functions. However, it doesn’t really have an app store, nor does any of the plans include an SSL, which is very odd for an ecommerce website builder. The latter is offset by the secure checkout, but a site-wide SSL is always better.

On the plus side, Volusion doesn’t charge transaction fees and has somewhat competitively priced plans. All of them impose bandwidth limitations and all of them but the most expensive one limit the number of products you can display.

Volusion pros:

  1. Streamlined site creation
  2. Zoom function
  3. Numerous payment options
  4. PCI compliant sites
  5. 14-day trial

Volusion cons:

  1. Limited number of free templates
  2. No SSL
  3. Complicated pricing
  4. Plan limits
  5. Learning curve
  6. SEO could be better

Top website builders provided by web hosting companies

Many web hosting companies were swift to realise that the rise of free website building platforms is a great business opportunity. Since they were already versed in all things related to website building and management, some of them partnered with established names, while others went on to develop their own site building tools.

Some of the solutions listed below are average, at best, but they reveal the pains web hosting companies go through in order to not lose customers to the likes of WiX and Squarespace.

Before analysing the pros and cons of the site builders provided by NetRegistry and GoDaddy, I want to express my bewilderment that bad website building software can be produced even today. Creating a polished and functional product is not that easy, but it is not exactly rocket science either. All the same, even the biggest names in the web hosting industry demonstrate that they can fail spectacularly at this task.

GoDaddy website builder – the unrivalled behemoth in the web hosting industry, GoDaddy’s very own GoCentral site builder is inexplicably poor. It was released recently after being developed with heavy customer feedback. The end result is disappointing, with barebones functionality and clunky interface.

GoDaddy GoCentral pros:

  1. Streamlined creative process
  2. Simple setup
  3. Easy to use
  4. 1-month free trial

GoDaddy GoCentral cons:

  1. Very limited features
  2. Limited customisation options
  3. Clunky interface
  4. No blogging
  5. No backup
  6. Looks and feels barebones
  7. Not that affordable

Crazy Domains website builder – a web hosting company with controversial reputation, the Crazy Domains website building tool comes with a decent functionality. It is rather easy to use, but the dubious company policies cast a shadow over it.

Crazy Domains website builder pros:

  1. Easy to use
  2. Drag-and-drop functionality
  3. Clean templates

Crazy Domains website builder cons:

  1. Poor support
  2. For the offered features, the plans should be cheaper
  3. Each plan limits the total number of pages
  4. Highly unsuitable for bigger websites
  5. No free trial

NetRegistry website builder – among the website builders AU has to offer, NetRegistry has a solid platform. However, the reputation of the company itself doesn’t inspire much confidence. Over the years, NetRegistry has struggled with the reliability of their servers.

NetRegistry hosting plans are quite pricey and the site builder packages are no exception.

NetRegistry website builder pros:

  1. Good core features
  2. Decent templates

NetRegistry website builder cons:

  1. Quite expensive
  2. Bandwidth limitations
  3. Unreliable support
  4. Problematic hosting servers with frequent downtimes and slow loading speeds
  5. No free trial

As you can see from the diverse products listed above, choosing the right website building tool is not an easy a task.

You need to conduct a proper research – the detailed reviews published here are an excellent starting point – and to test a platform or two to get your bearings.

However, first and foremost you need to create a concept. You need to figure out, at least loosely, the purpose and the potential scope of your website. Check your time and resources, probe your curiosity and desire to learn.

Building a website without a concept is like sailing without a purpose.

Spend all the time you need in choosing the right platform; getting it wrong can really damage your online future before it has even been born.

Mostly all website builders come with comprehensive tools, excellent support and very decent functionality in their respective niche of specialisation, but neither of these would do you any good if you don’t know what you want to achieve.

Q: How good are the free website builders?

A: In some instances, they are really good, but mostly they can give you a very good idea about the platform. Typically, their most notorious limitation is the inability to have your own domain name. You’d have to rely on subdomain like, which is far from ideal, as it hampers your SEO potential and makes it harder to remember for regular visitors.

Q: Are the free website builder softwares really free?

A: Yes, they are. The site building platforms display advertisement banners on free sites, generating revenue for themselves without charging the end user. Naturally, the free plans lack certain perks the paid subscriptions grant, but you could still build a very decent website.

Q: What does a free domain name mean?

A: It means that the registration of a domain name is included in the plan, which advertises it. Typically, a .COM domain name would cost about $10 per year; a free domain registration would negate this price for one year.

Q: What does “connect your domain name” mean?

A: If you own a domain name registered with another company and not with the site building platform itself, you could use it with the website builder. Typically, this is done by pointing your name servers toward the website building platform or by editing the A records in your DNS zone. Specific instructions must be provided by the support team (or the knowledge base) of the website builder and implemented by you or by the support team of your domain registrar.

Q: Do I need a domain name?

A: Yes. Unless you want to dabble with website builders as a hobby and have no serious intentions, a good domain name is crucial. It helps on so many levels that a separate article can be dedicated on the matter.

Q: Can I transfer my website from one site builder to another?

A: Generally, this is not possible. There are a few exceptions but many platforms are yet to implement such feature. That’s why choosing the right platform is extremely important.

Q: Do I need coding knowledge to work with any of the website builders?

A: No, all of them are designed to help people with absolutely no technical understanding establish a professional web presence. In some cases, CSS and HTML knowledge may be beneficial as it would allow you to modify the core code of the templates, but it is an added bonus and not a necessity.

Q: Which is the best website builder?

A: This depends largely on your goals and website concept. For instance, WiX is an excellent all-purpose platform suitable for beginners, while BoldGrid is a fantastically complicated, advanced solution. Formulate your idea, lay out the details of your vision and then calculate your budget and desire to commit time and effort into the building of your website. Read some of the reviews best website builder softwares we have here and the answer will crystalize.

Q: Which is the best site building platform in terms of SEO?

A: That’s a tough one. WordPress is the most quoted answer, even though hard, statistical data behind this statement is hard to find. The truth of the matter is that SEO depends largely on the content of your site. Most site building platforms have the SEO grounds well covered but without quality content no SEO strategy and tools can help you.

Q: Which is the cheapest website builders?

A: This is a tough one, because the advertised plans often don’t include all the features you might need. Based solely on the plans’ prices, WiX would be the most economical solution, starting at $4.50 per month. Check the prices carefully before committing and don’t forget to explore the app stores to see what you might need from there and how much it would cost.
